Access examination for prospective students without (German) 'Abitur'

It is also possible to study Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") without a German) 'Abitur'. You can find information on the general procedure as well as information on the requirements on the information pages for professionally qualified (persons).

If you are qualified in accordance with §4 of the Vocational Training University Admission Ordinance, you can take an access examination to gain approval to study.

You can study Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") as part of the degree programme for primary schools and primary schools with a specialisation in integrated special education. Other elements of this degree programme include educational sciences, elementary mathematics and German literacy. You can find an overview of the structure of the degree programme for primary schools on the study information pages.

For the access examination for the primary school programme and the primary school programme with a specialisation in integrated special education, you generally have to take five partial examinations:

  • oral examination (45 min.) in educational sciences
  • oral examination (45 min.) in elementary mathematics
  • Oral examination (45 min.) in German literacy
  • Oral examination (45 min.) in Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht")
  • Written examination (4 hours) in one of the four areas of educational sciences, elementary mathematics, German literacy or Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht"). The written examination must be taken before the oral examination in the relevant area.

Recommendation: Allow sufficient time to prepare for the access examination. Preparing for the examination in the period between the application for the access examination and the deadline for applications for a study place (approx. April to July for the winter semester, approx. October to January for the summer semester) is generally not sufficient, especially if you continue to work during this time. The recommended timetable (PDF) for the subject Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") provides an overview.
